How To: Art for the Living Room

By October 29, 2026No Comments

The living room is easily one of the most used spaces in any home. Similar to the kitchen, it’s a communal space where we live, laugh, and cry. Because we share so many moments here, you want the space to be comfortable, but also a true reflection of your own personality.

Choosing art is a deeply personal journey – much like finding your signature style. Take your time, trust your design instincts, and select pieces that capture your heart every single day. When you fill your space with what you love, your living room naturally transforms into a beautifully curated home.

If you are staring at a blank wall and feeling overwhelmed, you are not alone. To help you get started, I have three simple tips to consider when picking the perfect artwork for your living space.

1. MOOD

Art is the ultimate fashion statement for your walls, instantly dictating the mood the moment you step into the room. Consider the ambiance you wish to curate for your sanctuary.

For an air of calm elegance, look to a serene palette or classic black and white illustrations that whisper chic sophistication without overpowering the space. If your style leans toward the energetic, modern, and inspiring, opt for vibrant hues or striking, whimsical fashion illustrations that command the room. Let your piece be a beautiful reflection of your personal style!

2. COHESION

Your art shouldn’t simply match your furniture; it should effortlessly belong. This means you don’t have to perfectly match, it just needs to feel like it’s telling the same story and you can achieve that in a few different ways.

Take a cue from your current surroundings – the texture of your rug, the silk of your cushions, or flowers on the credenza. Select a piece that gracefully pulls one or two of those dominant tones onto the canvas. This thread of colour creates a beautiful sense of harmony, ensuring your room feels thoughtfully curated and timelessly designed.

3. PLACEMENT

Even the most breathtaking masterpiece loses its magic if it isn’t tailored to the room correctly. Where you decide to place the artworks makes a big difference to its impact on the room.

As a rule of thumb, hang your artwork so the center sits at eye level – roughly 145 to 150 centimetres from the floor. When positioning a statement piece above a sofa or console, ensure the artwork spans about two-thirds to three-quarters of the furniture’s width, hovering 15 to 20 centimetres above it. This anchors the piece beautifully, ensuring it commands the room rather than getting lost on a vast expanse of wall.
